When MPs Speak With Forked-Tongues

As someone who campaigns for Shared Parenting you could be forgiven for thinking that I would be delighted to hear an MP condemning the proposed Children & Families Bill (C&F Bill).

Fathers4Justice was not consulted on the C&F Bill. The content of the C&F Bill falls short of the Shared Parenting we campaign for. It is yet again another Government fudge, following the disgraceful Family Justice Review in 2010/11, that fails the many children and fathers denied proper relationships every day in our imploding family courts.

But please excuse me for not bringing out the bunting and a full marching band, because the MP who has suddenly taken this position is the MP for Romsey & Southampton North, Caroline Nokes, who:

  • In April 2010 supported Fathers 4 Justice’s campaign for Shared Parenting.
  • Then went back on her promise.
  • Then took up a position on the Children & Families Bill Committee (C&F Bill)
  • Then attacked F4J, making up lies about them to the press and police.
  • Then sent F4J a 30 page letter telling them they were wrong about their Shared Parenting Campaign and that the C&F Bill was wonderful.
  • Then in January 2014 attacked the C&F Bill Committee and Bill.

Keeping Up?

Indeed!

It is difficult to even try and second guess where this schizophrenic dance is heading. The only thing that we do know for certain is that there must be an election coming up!

Personal politics a-side, I thought it was worth asking Caroline Nokes MP on behalf of the Fathers 4 Justice supporters in her constituency (of which there are many) to support George Galloway’s EDM for Shared Parenting. Given Ms Nokes latest position on the C&F Bill, she should really be the poster-girl for this EDM.

Here below, is the email trail between us last Friday, which I think speaks for itself…

Dear Mrs O’Connor

Thank you for your email of today’s date.  I very seldom sign EDMs as in legislative terms they achieve nothing.

I am not aware of the sponsors of this EDM making an approach to the Backbench Business Committee for a debate on this subject, perhaps that might be a more constructive way forward than an EDM.  That would at least provide an opportunity to make the case direct to the Minister, and he would be obliged to respond, whereas with an EDM it does not even necessarily secure a Ministerial response.

Yours sincerely
Caroline Nokes

Dear Mrs Nokes

I am sure George Galloway MP is aware of the many options open to him with regards to debates and EDMs, but I have forwarded your email to him just incase he has missed anything.

Records show that in fact you do sign EDMs, even proposing 2 yourself which you petitioned other MPs to sign.

Neither of your 2 proposed EDMs got anywhere near as many signatures as the EDM being proposed by George Galloway, and given your much publicised position on shared parenting, the Children & Families Bill and your “campaign” for family law reform, of ALL the EDMs currently in circulation it would seem most odd if you did not sign this one.

Yours sincerely
Nadine O’Connor

The phrase “speaks with a forked tongue” means to say one thing and mean another or, to be hypocritical, or act in a duplicitous manner. In the longstanding tradition of many Native American tribes, “speaking with a forked tongue” has meant lying, and a person was no longer considered worthy of trust, once he had been shown to “speak with a forked tongue”.
